The
pitfalls of fastrack.
There are a lot of schools
now providing this course. In the past some have been irresponsible sending students off on their own
before they are ready. Students need to gain experience
gradually in protected waters in good conditions. Some
schools send students self skippering because they have
completed x number of weeks not because they are ready.
Other schools teach students on only one
yacht which means they are really Yachtmasters of a particular
yacht
only. Others split the course between various schools because
they lack the facilities to complete the whole course
themselves. This leads to lack of continuity and sometimes a
lesser quality course.
In our view fastrack should be done on various yachts all of
which handle differently and in various waters. Students should
get at least three weeks genuine self skippering but be
introduced to it by being set free in familiar waters first and
then extending their sailing area to unknown waters.
They should
have continuity of course with regular feedback on their
progress.
Yachts should be large enough to facilitate living aboard with
smaller yachts available for exams etc. The whole course should
be carried out in tidal waters which gives students the
experience and challenges that they need to become good
Yachtmasters. The course is offered by some schools ill-equipped
to provide it having no on shore facilities for the required
theory courses so students are taught theory in the confined
area of a yacht with everyone trying to get their time
at the chart or saloon table. This is not acceptable to the RYA
who require schools teaching theory courses to have available
classroom facilities and to use them for those theory courses.
RYA 2006 Conference.
The pitfalls of
fastrack have been pointed out by schools not running
fastrack courses at every RYA conference that I have been to
since becoming an instructor.
To counter this James Stevens from the RYA stated at the 2006
RYA conference that Fastrack Yachtmasters had as good a record
as slow track Yachtmasters and there was little or no difference
in accidents and mishaps.
At the same RYA conference
2006 it was recommended by James Stevens that ocean or
over long mile building passages were not suitable for fastrack
courses and that passages should be shorter. In our view short
interesting passages visiting lots of ports are far more
interesting and taxing than sitting on a yacht for several days
or weeks at a time.
At ASA we have set out to do
all these things by investing in different types of yacht two
of which are larger more comfortable yachts suitable for living
aboard. We visit ports in Spain, Morocco and the Algarve and
limit our trips to maximum 150 miles (all tidal) so boat
handling is done on a regular basis and students do not get
bored. We have a maximum 5 students to a boat policy even on the
longer mile building trips which lets each student have more
time as skipper and get more boat handling. Two large on site
classrooms, a fastrack lounge with TV, Video, internet access
and a free phone for calls to Europe and some other countries
proves our commitment to our fastrack students.
Free Motor Course.
In addition, we think every yachtsman should know about
motor yachts and their problems so have included absolutely free
a two day RYA Helmsman's course on our Jeanneau motor
cruiser.
At ASA we provide a first class
fastrack course which the competition cannot match.
Why are we different?
In a nutshell, Allabroad is a family
business and we care about you, about getting you through and
about your future after you complete the course.
We are in a warm and tidal area.
We have all the required facilities and more.
Allabroad is the only school that has the facilities to provide
STCW 95 training in Gibraltar and provides all the training for
Gibraltar Port Workers.
We are well known in the industry for the quality of our
Yachtmasters and Instructors with many of our ex students
running schools of their own, working here at Allabroad and in
other schools in Gibraltar. There is one school in Western
Australia where the principal and two of his instructors were
trained at Allabroad.
Other schools in the Med. have requested us to inform them of
any good available instructors trained by us. If you join any
school in Gibraltar you may well be being trained by one of our
ex students.
You can review your options after two weeks and you
can even take the two week opt out option which shows our
confidence that you will be satisfied with your course.
Add to all this a free motor course and
STCW 95 training at no extra charge and you have an excellent
all round package.
We are the only fastrack school that dares to have an open forum
so you can have a chat with our ex students.
