MCA STCW Efficient Deck Hand (EDH)

5 days | 775pp

Course Approvals: MCA (UK) to STCW Table A-II/5

Who needs the MCA Efficient Deck Hand Course?

The EDH course is a valuable certificate of proficiency to transition from and entry-level Deck Hand to an Able Seafarer and it is a mandatory requirement for OOW (Yachts less than <3000GT) and needs to be held for 18 months before this CoC can be issued. Masters looking to progress towards their Master <500GT, Master <3000GT or Chief Mater <3000GT career paths are recommended to take the EDH course as soon as possible to ensure they are not held back when they are ready to sit their orals; 18 months is a long time to wait when you are ready in all other requirements.

EDH Course Pre-requisites:

  • Personnel attending this course are required to be at least 17 years of age.
  • You should hold a valid seafarer medical fitness certificate (ENG1 or accepted country equivalent) to ensure you are not precluded from your chosen career path at sea.
  • The following certification and experience will permit entry on to the EDH course and examination:
    • An MCA accepted Yachtmaster Offshore, or
    • A Yacht Rating Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) with at least 6 months’ onboard yacht service and a steering certificate, or
    • A Navigational Watch Rating Certificate of Proficiency, or
    • A Boat Master Licence (BML) Tier 1 level 2 certificate, or
    • A Tug Rating CoP with at least 6 months’ seagoing service and a steering certificate or an NWR CoP, or
    • A UK Class 1 or 2 Fishing Certificate of Competency (Deck or Engineering), or
    • Holding a Seafish Fishing Under 16.5m Skippers Certificate (with evidence of at least 6 months’ seagoing service), or
    • Enrolment onto the following Officer of the Watch (STCW II/1) courses:
      • An MCA-approved cadet training programme, or
      • An MCA-approved overseas collaborative programme (1+1).
  • Before the EDH certificate can be issued, a minimum of 6 months seagoing service on vessels of 15m is required (within this inland water category D & C are also counted at full value). Certificates can be retained by the MCA training centre until such sea service is achieved.

What does the EDH Course Teach?

The course proves proficiency in essential deck duties, including bridge watchkeeping, anchoring and mooring operations, shipboard maintenance including rigging bosuns chair, paint stage and using blocks and shackles safely and effectively. It enhances ropework and rigging skill sets, with a full proficiency in splicing and whipping, and when to apply different knots, bends and hitches. It also covers cargo operations, safety of shipboard operations and using the COSWP for correct and safe work permits, safe handling and pollution prevention.
