MCA STCW Medical First Aid

4 day | £595

Over 4 days, the MCA STCW Medical First Aid course equips seafarers to provide immediate, effective first aid onboard covering injury, illness and medical emergency. It balances theoretical knowledge of anatomy with practical scenarios, including resuscitation and casualty management, essential for maritime safety.

This course is aimed at those designated to provide medical first aid on, yachts, ships or commercial vessels.

This is a valuable certificate for any crew member and is well respected in the industry – skippers often require or want at least 1 member of crew to hold this certification, so it can be the qualification that sets your CV apart. This is a popular qualification for Yachtmasters and Deck Hands.

It covers core topics including:

  • Medical Emergencies: Recognizing and treating conditions like chest pain, asthma, diabetes (hypoglycaemia), and seizures.
  • Injuries & Trauma: Management of wounds, fractures, burns, scalds, abdominal injuries, and amputation.
  • Environmental Hazards: Treating hypothermia, heat exhaustion, and stroke.
  • Rescue Techniques: Positioning, rescuing, and transporting casualties.
  • Resuscitation: Practical CPR and use of medical equipment/supplies.

The Medical First Aid (MFA) Assessment

MFA is completed as a mix of written tests, direct observation of practical skills, and scenario-based simulations.
